Comptroller’s Office Expands Capacity: Comptroller Appoints Director of Internal Audit and Control
Kingston, NY (February 16, 2022) – Ulster County Comptroller March Gallagher announces the appointment of a new staff member in the Comptroller’s Office.
Comptroller Gallagher has appointed Samuel Sonenberg, CPA, to the position of Director of Internal Audit and Control. Mr. Sonenberg i s a Certified Public Accountant and holds BS in Accounting from SUNY Albany, bringing significant accounting experience from both the private and public sector. He has previously worked in an internal audit capacity for the New York State Insurance Fund, the New York State Office of Mental Health, and the New York State Department of Civil Service. He most recently served as a Lottery Game Director for New York State Lottery.

We advertised and interviewed widely for the position and while we were thankful to find several excellent candidates, Sam was by far the strongest” stated Comptroller Gallagher, “bringing a bevy of experience working to improve the internal controls, efficiency and effectiveness of government programs. We are excited to bring someone with Sam’s expertise on to our team as we strive to improve Ulster County.”
The position of Director of Internal Audit and Control, which previously oversaw the audit program of the Comptroller’s Office, remained vacant in 2020 and was not budgeted in 2021 to be fiscally conservative during the pandemic.
