County Weights & Measures: Small Department, Huge Responsibilities

Kingston, NY (October 11, 2016) – “A department consisting of two people has an inspection and enforcement responsibility that impacts the daily lives of all of us and protects consumers at every level of purchase,” says Ulster County Comptroller Elliott Auerbach. “It is because of their diligence, that devices used to sell commodities on the basis of weight, volume or sizes, ranging from supermarket scales to gas pumps, are accurate, ”the Comptroller continued.

A recent audit of the Ulster County Bureau of Weights and Measures identifies the responsibilities of enforcing New York State Agriculture and Markets Law as well as the “consumer pricing” law of Ulster County.

The audit reviewed:

  • Inspection and testing of weighing and measuring devices,
  • Response to consumer complaints and
  • Internal controls over financial operations
